How do you format your research papers so that some pages have page numbers and other don't?  Or if your page numbers need to go from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers?

If you use section breaks & in the header or footer, click Link to Previous, which in effect, unLinks to Previous (the formatting or data in the previous section), you can limit your pagination (page numbering) to specific sections of your document.

It's easy!  Here's how:

First, insert section breaks.  Place your cursor at the end of the text or bottom of the page (but not in the footer) before the page that will have a new or different page number.

Word 2003: Insert | Break | Section break types | Next Page

Word 2007: Page Layout | Breaks | Section Breaks | Next Page (insert a section break and start the new section on the next page).

Second, separate section 1 from section 2 in the footer.  Go to the next page (after the section break) and go into the footer.

Word 2003: View | Header and Footer

The Header and Footer tool bar opens.  The cursor is in the header.  Click the icon 'Switch Between Header and Footer' to go to the footer.  The cursor will be in the footer.  Above the dotted line is 'Footer - Section 2' on the left and 'Same as Previous' on the right.  You need to break this link to the previous section.

Again with the Header and Footer tool bar, click on the icon 'Link to Previous.'  Notice the 'Same as Previous' note above the dotted line is gone.  Now you can add the page number.

Word 2007: Insert | Footer | Blank

This will open Header & Footer Tools | Design (tab). The Type Text box in the footer is highlighted.  Above the dotted line is 'Footer - Section 2' on the left and 'Same as Previous' on the right.  You need to break this link to the previous section.

Go to the Navigation box | Click on Link to Previous.  Notice the 'Same as Previous' note above the dotted line is gone.  Now you can add the page number.

Third, add page numbers.

Word 2003: This takes two steps.  Still using the Header and Footer tool bar

Insert Page Number (icon).  On the Styles & Formatting toolbar above, click on the Center (icon) to center the page number.

Format Page Number (icon) | Number Format (1,2,3 - select from dropdown) & Page numbering | Start at: (1 - select from dropdown).

Close Header & Footer.

Word 2007:  This takes two steps.

Header & Footer box | Page Number | Bottom of Page | Plain Number 2 (to set location in footer).

Page Number | Format Page Numers | Number Format (1,2,3 - select from dropdown) & Page numbering | Start at: (1 - select from dropdown).

Close Header & Footer.

If you need to stop the page numbers for the Bibliography, repeat steps 1 & 2, but delete or don't add the page number in step 3.
