A directed work experience in a childrens musical theater production, in connection with Christian Youth Theater (CYT), a local community theater organization. Each internship will be individually arranged and supervised by both a faculty member in the music department and a professional in the organization. The internship will culminate in a review by the supervising professional, a formal written report by the student, and an evaluation by the music faculty member. Offered during Fall semesters.
Study of American/English musical theater as we know it today. The course will start with the 19th century English operettas and the comic light operas of Gilbert and Sullivan and continue through the golden era of the 50s and 60s up to contemporary rock musicals of today. It will focus on the various trends and landmark productions of historical importance. Outside attendance to musical theater performances is required. Open to all students.
Set design and construction for theater and video will be covered. Various techniques, styles and methods will be explored. Major designers in the field will be studied. Practical hands-on experience with design concepts, drawings, drafting and computer design will be required. Shop lab hours in set construction and painting techniques required. The study of lighting technologies will be explored. Methods and techniques to achieve theatrical lighting effects will be examined as well as color analysis. Actual hands on experience in design, set up and running a show will be included. All types of lighting equipment, maintenance and program design will be explored in this course. An overview of the major historical eras of theater in western civilization up to the 20th century. Major time periods covered are Greek, Roman, Middle Ages, Renaissance, and 18th & 19th century. Emphasis is placed on the elements and techniques of each time period as applicable to contemporary theater today. Open to all students.
All the artistic aspects of a theatrical presentation are based on the fundamentals of art. An overview of art history will be explored along with major influential artists. Concepts of unity and harmony, variety and contrast, balance and proportion, color and light will be studied and practiced. This course is useful for design work in lighting, costuming, make-up, directing and writing. Prerequisite: MT 140. Open to MT students. Lab hours required.
This course explores various historical periods for the purpose of designing costumes for theatrical works. Elements of contrast, texture, weight, color and functionality will be studied. Actual design and construction will be a major part of this course. Opportunity to work with costume designers during a preproduction show will be available. Open to MT students. The human facial structure is explored. All types of theatrical make-up is a part of this practical hands-on class. Traditional stage make-up, stylized, animal, scare and gore, old age, and prosthetics make-ups as well as basic hair and wig design will be studied and applied. Students will have the opportunity to apply skills to a current production. Prerequisite: MT 140. Lab fee.
Current methods of sound technology will be covered with hands-on experience in set-up, trouble shooting and repair, and audio mixing. Experience in sound reinforcement for various kinds of events such as concerts, public speakers, tour groups, recording studio, and fully staged musical theatrical productions will be included. This is a basic acting class for majors and non-majors. Exploring foundations of acting technique through creative playing, open critiques, and in-class exercises. Study will include an introduction to acting styles and/or methods prior to the twentieth century up through Stanislovski acting terminology and technique, beginning rehearsal techniques, and performance analysis. Performance skill will be practiced and enhanced through the preparation of monologues and a short scene.
This course continues refinement of acting techniques begun in MT 265 through the study and final performance of selected scenes, with a focus on character development and script analysis. Training will deal with specific acting styles and techniques such as Greek Drama, Shakespeare, Comedy of Manners, Commedia Dell’Arte, Theater of the Absurd and Meisner Technique. Course work will also include the development of emotional realism as exemplified by modern playwrights, such as Ibsen, Chekov, Strindberg, and Miller.
This course will study musical theater directing as a practice and a discipline. Students will learn how to prepare for various aspects of musical direction including: planning, production staff, casting, and the rehearsal process. Considerable time will be spent in forming a Biblically based aesthetic while also developing many directing skills through the directing of scenes that will be presented in class. Prerequisite: MT140 or instructors permission.
This course covers the practical application of how to run a performing arts company. Lessons in box office management, marketing a show, public relations, management and finances for non-profit organizations and development (fund raising) will be discussed. Open to MT students. This course explores the various approaches, styles, and techniques of directing expressly for the camera. Conception, story boarding, scripting, locations, angles, actor/director interaction, production teams and editing will be examined. Students will have the opportunity to create their own videos. The examination of the structure, function and purpose of the musical will be explored. Theater trends as well as major playwrights and lyricists will be studied. Students will work with professional composers, musical arrangers, lyricists, and playwrights to develop their own scripts and music. Those in the musical theater emphasis may choose to have a major directorship role in the SDCC Spring Musical, under the supervision of MT faculty. Student will be expected to apply principles
and methods acquired in MT courses and fieldwork, and will present a formal written report at the end of the musical production. The student will be evaluated on the success of his/her role in the musical by a committee of faculty and peers. (CAPSTONE)
