Job Description 

Faculty—Department Chair of Education 

San Diego Christian College 

Status: Permanent-Full-Time/Exempt  

Department: Education & Number: 224 

Reports to: Vice President for Academics 

Purpose  

To support the SDCC mission through the instruction of assigned courses as well as engaging in community endeavors and to provide leadership to an academic department. 

Scope 

Full-time faculty have instructional responsibility for learning outcomes associated with their assigned courses, they stay current in their disciplines, fulfill administrative assignments. Department Chairs perform administrative and other functions (i.e., attend meetings, plan and execute department chapels, socials, etc.) that facilitate departmental success.

Develop and execute plans for building graduate program within Education.

Work Performed 

General Responsibilities 

Stay conversant with the philosophical and pedagogical developments in one’s field 

Maintain compliance with federal/state legislation 

Conduct self-evaluation as required 

Attend Faculty Forum meetings 

Discharge duties related to committee membership (faculty typically serve on two committees) 

Attend general sessions of Bible Conference, International Outreach Festival, and Day of Prayer 

Serve as academic advisor to assigned students 

Support department efforts for program development and maintenance 

Discharge administrative duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academics 

Maintain employee dress code 

Course Preparation Responsibilities 

Attend the Fall Orientation  

Review prior syllabi and selected textbooks and/or course materials 

Conduct textbook selection for the courses 

Prepare syllabi for each course in accordance with guidelines provided in the Faculty Handbook 

Post copies of syllabi on Blackboard course site prior to the first day of class 

Submit digital copy of syllabi to the Department Chair and to the Vice President for Academics prior to the first day of class 

Instructional Responsibilities 

Take attendance at each class session and record attendance through Empower Web 

Prepare for each class session, taking into consideration diversities in learning styles 

Be present to teach every class or provide for a qualified substitute in the case of your absence 

Open each class session in prayer 

Maintain regularly scheduled office hours totaling ten hours per week across four days of the week 

Respond to student emails within 48 hours 

Plan for and provide alternatives for students to make-up work in the event of an administratively excused absence 

Assessment Responsibilities 

Plan for multiple assessment measures of student learning 

Grade and return assignments in a timely manner ( i.e., within a week) 

Plan for and meet during the allotted two-hour final exam time 

Submit midterm grades through Empower Web by deadline on the Academic Calendar 

Submit final grades through Empower Web by the deadline on the Academic Calendar 

Participate as assigned on Assessment Day 

Department Chair Responsibilities 

Monitoring and recommending changes to department budget; 

Recruiting, supervising, and evaluating full and part-time faculty; 

Annual planning and coordinating of departmental course offerings; 

Reviewing department course syllabi; 

Coordinating department's textbook orders; 

Insuring that current course syllabi are posted as designated; 

Implementing comprehensive program review;* 

Preparing and modifying department information in the college catalog and on the      college website; 

Oversee any program related materials or facilities (labs, teaching aids, etc.) 

Coordinating the department advising process; 

Developing a climate of community within the department; 

Promoting the department both within and beyond the campus community; 

Fostering an ongoing dialogue among department faculty and with the vice      president for academics in regards to the department's vision for development; 

Implementing strategies for program development; 

Maintaining a contact list with department alumni. 

Qualifications 

Ph.D. or Ed.D. with research and teaching interests in educational technology. Substantial successful K – 12 teaching experience.  

Knowledge of current research, pedagogy, and assessments in educational technology and ability to model technology use for teachers. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues at the college and teachers in secondary schools.  

Knowledgeable and conversant in California teacher credential system 

Commitment to working with a diverse student population.  

Established university record as associate or full professor, including successful teaching, strong record of scholarly work; commitment to service and professional development;

  • Support for the educational philosophy of the College and the integration of biblical texts and principles into all academic disciplines 
  • Prior successful teaching experience and/or demonstrated ability to communicate articulately to groups of varying sizes

Faculty work under the leadership of the academic department chair but have general autonomy in how they plan for and facilitate learning through classroom interaction and out-of-class assignments.
