The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team used a dominating second half to pull away from the Concordia Eagles on Saturday night 73-54. The win caps off the best regular season in SDCC women’s basketball history, as the Lady Hawks reached the 20-win plateau for the first time ever.
“Reaching 20 wins in a season means a lot,” said Head Coach Kelsey Dillon. “The top teams in the conference have 20 wins as a goal every year, and to reach that mark is a great accomplishment.”
Both teams went back and forth early in the game, with neither team taking a large advantage until SDCC (20-10, 9-9) went on an 11-2 run starting at the 12:33 mark to push the Hawks up 25-16 with 7:45 left in the first half.
CU (7-18, 4-14) would respond with a 15-6 run to close out the half and head into the locker room tied at 31-31.
The second half began similarly to the first, with both team exchanging buckets. The Eagles took a 36-35 lead at the 17:15 mark; it would be the last lead CU would hold.
The Lady Hawks rolled out a 14-2 run over the next six minutes, sparked by a pressuring full court press, to take a double digit lead at 49-38. SDCC would continue to build their lead, eventually stretching it to a 71-51 lead with just over one minute left before claiming the 73-54 victory.
“The second half was great for us,” said Dillon. “They seniors didn’t want to lose on Senior Night and jeopardize our tournament seed.”
“When we started to press is when things really took off for us. “
The Lady Hawks were led by Brittany Daniel with 21 points. Senior Brittany Robinson (pictured left) added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jasmin Thomas added 16 points.
SDCC shot 56.0% (14-25) in the second half to pull away.
Before the game, the SDCC Women’s Basketball program honored four seniors: Jasmin Thomas, Michelle Gonzalez, Brittany Robinson, and Juanita Lewis.
“This senior class has helped us turn that corner,” said Dillon. “We have had some great players in the past, but this really is the first complete group that set a new tone for our program. “
“They have done a great job for us.”
The Lady Hawks head into the GSAC tournament, traveling to Biola on Wednesday, February 29th for a 7:30pm matchup with the Eagles. SDCC and Biola split the regular season series.
