The San Diego Christian College baseball team dropped the GSAC opening double header to the defending national champion Concordia Eagles on Thursday. Despite out-hitting CU in both games, the Hawks fell in game one, 5-4, and in game two, 12-4.
SDCC falls to 5-11 (0-2) with the losses while CU moves to 8-4 (2-0) with the wins.
In game one, CU jumped on top in the bottom of the first with a pair of hits and a run. SDCC responded with a run of their own in the top of the second, when Luis Rivas doubled and was driven in by Sean Sweeney (pictured left), knotting the game at 1-1.
The Eagles looked to take control with a run in the third and three runs in the fifth, to take a 5-1 lead.
The Hawks chipped away at the CU lead with a pair of runs in the seventh. With one out, Sweeney singled and stole second. With a Dawson Jones single, Sweeney moved to third, putting runners on the corners with one out. Robert Aguirre then singled through the left side, driving in Sweeney and advancing Jones to second base. After Josh Fernandez pinch ran for Jones at second base, Jeff Lusardi legged out an infield single to load the bases with one out. Victor Martinez then singled, picking up Fernandez and advancing the other runners one base and cutting the CU lead to 5-3. The Hawks were unable to capitalize as Nick Bando lined out to the third baseman and Garrison McLagan flew out to centerfield.
After Hawks’ pitcher Lucas Whitmore worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, SDCC produced another run when Luis Rivas singled and stole second base. Sweeney then drove in Rivas with his third hit of the game to make it a one run game, 5-4.
Whitmore again worked a 1-2-3 inning, giving SDCC a chance in their half of the ninth inning. After a one out single by Martinez, the Hawks were unable to push a run across.
Sweeney was 3-4 with 2 RBIs, while Martinez was 3-5. Robert Aguirre and Rivas each had two hits for SDCC. Whitmore (1-2) threw the complete game, surrendering 5 runs (4 earned), scattering 10 hits and striking out 2.
In game two, SDCC held the lead briefly in the top of the second when Alex Mann singled and later scored on a Rich Aguirre single and an error by the third basemen.
CU responded with one in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1.
The Eagles took control of the game in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of three Hawk errors and scoring six runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead heading into the fourth.
SDCC tried to cut into the lead when Chris Pascual hit a solo homerun in the top of the fourth. However, the Eagles pounded out five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to move the lead to 11-2.
The Hawks used two CU errors and RBIs from McLagan and Rivas to score a pair of runs in the fifth, but the lead was too much and CU claimed the 12-4 victory.
Lusardi was the only Hawk with multiple hits in game two, going 2-4. The Hawks out-hit CU 11-10 in game two.
McLagan (0-3) took the loss for SDCC, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) over 2.1 innings.
The Hawks host the Eagles on Saturday, February 25th, for a doubleheader starting at 10:00am.
