Riverside, Calif. --If you wanted to see some crafty pitching, today was the day to head out to La Sierra University where the San Diego Christian College pitchers lit up the strike zone for 19 strikeouts in 14 innings against the Eagles in a sweep, taking game one 6-1 and game two 12-4. Adair Robles (pictured left) and Lucas Whitmore led the Hawks to a combined 35 strikeouts over 35 innings of work in the four games against LSU this season.
In game one, Robles took the mound and from the very first pitch seemed determined to show he can go the distance after a blister forced him to leave his last start. Robles was consistently in and out of the strike zone, fooling hitters with his breaking pitches, and throwing his fastball by the LSU hitters. Robles ended the game allowing only one run and scattering four Eagle hits. Robles has been over powering in every contest this year, throwing 25.2 innings, striking out 30 and holding a 2-2 record.
Game 2 featured another dominating pitching performance as Lucas Whitmore threw a complete game, striking out 11 and leading the Hawks to a 12-4 victory. Whitmore was on target with his curve ball and spotted up his fastball on the outside corner which had the hitters fooled throughout most of the game.
The Hawks offense got going early, rolling out seven runs in the top of the first inning, and scoring in the first four innings. That would be plenty for Whitmore, who has also been an impressive addition to the Hawks this season after transferring from Lubbock Christian University, where Whitmore gained valuable playoff experience. Last season, Whitmore pitched in the NAIA College World Series and was tuning up for his rematch against Concordia University, who he faced in the CWS.
Jeff Lusardi led SDCC, going 4-6 with a double and 2 RBIs on the day. Sean Sweeney went 3-5 on the day with 2 walks, 2 stolen bases and 2 runs scored. The Hawks hitters totaled 18 runs on the day with a combined 16 hits to try and take some momentum into conference play.
The Hawks kick off GSAC play against the defending National Champions, the Concordia University Eagles, on Thursday, February 23rd at CU. The Hawks then host the Eagles on Saturday, February 25th for a double header starting at 10:00am.
