The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team kept their conference tournament hopes alive behind a 20-point effort from Senior Benji Arvizu (picture left) in a 68-55 victory over Hope International University on Tuesday night.
SDC moves to 7-15 overall and 3-12 in the GSAC while HIU falls to 11-11 overall and 4-11 in the GSAC.
The Hawks started out strong, building a double figure lead of 16-6 at the 12:45 mark in the first half. After a HIU timeout, the Royals went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 18-18 with 9:08 remaining in the half. SDC would respond with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 28-18 lead on a Keenan Patterson layup with just over six minutes left before halftime. The Royals would fight back to make it a 32-26 game heading into the locker room.
The Hawks would come out in the second half going on an 10-2 run over the first six minutes to take a 42-28 lead. HIU would chip away at the SDC lead, making it a 50-46 game with 5:46 left in the game.
SDC would respond with a 13-4 run over the next four minutes to put the game away. Arvizu had nine points in the final five minutes of the game, including a huge three pointer with 2:10 left in the game to push the Hawks in front 57-48. The Hawks would outscore HIU 18-9 over the final 5:46 to pull away.
Arvizu led the team with a season high 20 points. Raphael Rodriguez had 11 points and Tim Sanders added 11 rebounds.
SDC shot 44.6% (25-56) from the field for the game and limited HIU to 33.9% (21-62) shooting. The Hawks knocked down 15-18 second half free throws, including making 11-12 free throws in the final 1:32 of the game.
The Hawks continue their season by hosting Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, February 18th at 7:30pm.
