El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team used a big first half, and fought off a second half Hope International University surge, to pull out a 61-57 victory over the Lady Royals on Tuesday night.
SDC moves to 19-7 overall and 8-7 in the GSAC while HIU falls to 4-23 overall and 1-14 in the GSAC.
The Lady Hawks built a big first half lead despite only shooting 11-29 (37.9%) from the field. An 11-2 run early sent SDC up 20-7 at the 5:45 mark after a jumper from Brittany Robinson. The Lady Hawks would maintain a double figure lead heading into the break, 30-18.
After a pair of three pointers to start the second half from SDC’s Hannah Miller to put the Lady Hawks up 36-23, HIU would fight their way back into the game. The Lady Royals would go on a 17-3 run over a six minute stretch to take a 40-38 lead at the 10:44 mark.
The game would then go back and forth, until SDC took the lead for good when Melissa Beatty made three consecutive baskets with five minutes left in the game. Beatty’s three shots sparked a 10-2 run that put SDC up 58-51 with 1:25 remaining. The Lady Hawks would make free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
SDC was led by Robinson with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Miller and Jasmin Thomas added 10 points each. Jermani Stewart had 7 points and hauled in 11 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks shot 44.4% from the field in the second and survived a hot shooting second half from the Lady Royals (53.6%).
The Lady Hawks continue play, hosting #13 Azusa Pacific University on Saturday, February 18th with a 5:30pm tip.
