Fresno, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team fell on the road to Fresno Pacific University 79-70 Saturday night.

SDC falls to 6-15 overall and 2-12 in the GSAC. With the win, Fresno Pacific moves to 13-13 overall and 4-10 in the GSAC. The loss is SDC’s 11th by single digits, including 7 single digit losses in the GSAC.

“It is one of those years where you have to learn from close games,” said Head Coach Tim Cook. “This is another learning experience. We have a high character team and a great coaching staff, so we continue to fight in every minute of every game.”

FPU jumped up early and held the lead the entire first half. SDC kept the lead close and tied the score at 20-20 at the 8:25 mark after a Keenan Patterson three pointer. FPU took the lead back and went into the locker room up 35-34.

SDC shot 13-22 (59.1%) from the field in the first half.

The second half saw four ties and eight lead changes. SDC took their first lead of the game on a Calvin Seaberry layup three minutes into the second half. The Hawks took their largest lead of the game when Johnny Del Bene drilled a three pointer to put SDC up 51-47 with 12:51 to play.

Both teams went back and forth, with neither team taking control. With the score 68-67, FPU went on an 11-3 run over the final 4:06 of the game to put the game away.

The Hawks shot 14-28 from the three point line for the game. FPU was 22-31 (including 19-25 in the second half) from the free throw line while SDC was 8-13.

SDC was led by Del Bene with 19 points. Patterson and Benji Arvizu had 12 points each.

“This conference is the best in the country and we are prepared for every battle,” lamented Cook. “This time of year it is about heart and effort.”

“Tonight, we just came up short on the road.”

SDC hosts Hope International University on Tuesday with a scheduled tip at 7:30pm.
