The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team built a big first half lead but could not withstand a 48 point second half from #12 Vanguard University as the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Hawks 71-64.
SDC falls to 17-8 overall and 6-7 in the GSAC. With the loss, the Lady Hawks fall to fifth in the conference, tied with Biola. Vanguard remains second in the GSAC with a 10-3 conference mark and an overall record of 16-5.
SDC started the game scoring on their first six possessions, including a trifecta of three pointers, to take a 15-0 lead at the 16:04 mark. The Lady Hawks would continue to build the lead, reaching a 29-10 advantage with 7:57 left before halftime. VU would cut into the lead, using a 13-4 run to close the half and take the SDC lead down to 33-23 heading into the locker room.
Vanguard continued their run into the start of the second half, cutting the Lady Hawks lead to 33-30 just two minutes into the half. SDC would maintain a small advantage until a VU three pointer put the Lady Lions up 42-40 with 13:45 remaining in the game.
VU would use a 13-4 run to push the lead into double figures at 55-44 with 8:54 left in the game. The Lady Lions would keep the lead out of reach, pushing the advantage to 67-55 with 1:14 left in the game. SDC, showing great heart, used a pair of three pointers from Hannah Miller to cut the lead in half. After a stop, SDC’s Brittany Robinson grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled, making both free throws and making it a 67-63 game with :29 left. VU, however, was able to knock down free throws in the final seconds to hold onto the win.
SDC was led by Miller with 15 points. Brittany Daniel added 14 point and Jasmin Thomas had 12 points.
VU had a hot shooting second half (54.8%), including knocking down 6-11 three pointers.
The Lady Hawks continue play at Fresno Pacific on Saturday, February 11th.
