El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team came back from 15 down in the second half, but was unable to overtake the #22 Westmont Warriors, falling 68-64 on Saturday night.
SDC falls to 5-14 overall and 1-11 in the GSAC. WC moves to 17-4 and 9-3.
Neither team started quickly, with SDC holding their largest lead of the at the 15:31 mark of the first half, 7-2. The Warriors went on an 11-3 run to take the lead and stretch their lead to 18-13 lead with just over nine minutes left in the first. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the half, and SDC went into the locker room down 27-22.
After an initial three pointer from SDC’s Raphael Rodriguez to start the second half, WC went on a 15-2 run over a five minute stretch to grab their largest lead of the game at 42-27. SDC showed the resilience of a Tim Cook coached team, and responded with 13-4 run to take the Warrior lead down to 46-40.
Westmont went on another run to push the lead back to double figures, and held a 57-48 lead with 4:00 on the clock. The Hawks then went on a 7-0 run capped off by three pointer from Arturo Prieto, to make it a 57-55 game with 2:05 left in the game.
WC responded with a bucket and knocked down free throws in the final minutes to take the game 68-64.
The Hawks were led by Rodriguez and Benji Arvizu with 10 points each. The Hawks made five more shots than the Warriors (26-21), but Westmont was 23-29 from the free throw line while SDC only shot six free throws, making two.
The Hawks shot 50% from the field for the game, including shooting 17-28 (60.7%) in the second half.
