The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team couldn’t complete a second half comeback on Tuesday night, falling at home to the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions 68-62.
The Hawks fall to 5-13 overall and 1-10 in the GSAC with the loss. PLNU moves to 14-6 overall and 7-4 in the GSAC. The loss is the eighth single digit loss this season for the Hawks.
SDC started out quickly, jumping up 8-0 within the first minute of the game. PLNU battled back with a 12-4 run to knot the game at 12-12 at the 13:56 mark. The Sea Lions went up and held a small advantage for much of the first half. The Hawks were able to tie the game at 28-28 on a Johnny Del Bene layup, but the Sea Lions used a 15-6 run to close out the first half with a 43-34 lead.
Both teams shot well in the first half, with SDC shooting 58.3% (14-24) and PLNU shooting 60.9% (14-23).
The Hawks started the second half the same way they started the game, going on an 11-4 run out of the gate to make it a one possession game at 47-45 with 16:18 left in the game. The Sea Lions kept the game just out of reach, until Arturo Prieto’s (pictured left) three pointer tied the game at 53-53 with 10:10 remaining.
The Sea Lions went back up and held the lead until SDC’s Keenan Patterson dialed up a three pointer of his own to tie the game at 60-60 with just over four minutes remaining. PLNU, however, was able to make their free throws down the stretch. Despite not making a field goal in the final 4:51, the Sea Lions were 8-8 from the charity stripe to close the game out.
The Hawks were led by Prieto and Patterson off the bench, combining for 20 points. The Sea Lions had three in double figures, including Jake Johnston off the bench with 19 points.
The Hawks made more field goals than the Sea Lions (23 for SDC opposed to 21 for the PLNU), but PLNU was 22-29 from the free throw line compared to 7-10 for SDC.
SDC hosts Westmont College on Saturday, February 4th with the game scheduled for a 7:30pm tip.
