The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team found themselves in yet another one possession game on Tuesday night but were unable to capture victory, as the Biola Eagles escaped the Ryan Athletic Center with a 62-60 win. The loss is the fifth this season for SDC by less than three points.
SDC falls to 5-11 overall and 1-8 in the GSAC. Biola moves to 14-7 and 4-5 in the GSAC.
The Hawks started strong, jumping up 17-6 early in the game, prompting an Eagle timeout. After the timeout, Biola methodically went on a 12-1 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 18-18. The Hawks were able to take the lead, and maintain the lead, for the rest of the first half and went into the locker room up 32-30.
The Eagles came out of halftime with a spark and went on a 14-4 run over the first seven minutes of the second half to build their biggest lead of the game at 44-36. SDC responded when Freshman Raphael Rodriguez nailed three pointers on consecutive possessions to trim the BU lead to 44-42 at the 12:37 mark.
BU was able to maintain the lead and it looked like the Eagles were starting to pull away. The Hawks, however, would continue to fight, and made it a one possession game when Tim Sanders drilled a three pointer with 7:11 left, cutting the BU lead to 50-47.
After Biola moved their lead back to 53-47, the Hawks scored on consecutive possessions to make it a 53-51 game. The Eagles’ Davey Hopkins then calmly hit a three pointer as the shot clock expired to make it a 56-51 game. SDC’s Johnny Del Bene responded with a three pointer of his own, again making it a one possession game at 56-54.
After an offensive foul, the Hawks tied at 56-56 with 2:28 left on the clock, when Xavier Mylleville drove past the defender and dropped a layup in.
After a BU bucket and a SDC free throw, the Eagles called timeout, clinging to a 58-57 lead. Out of the timeout, BU’s Hopkins again stepped back and drilled a three pointer to push BU up 61-57. The Hawks responded on the ensuing possession, when Calvin Seaberry grabbed a long offensive rebound and drilled a three pointer with only :15.3 left on the clock to cut the lead to 61-60.
SDC immediately fouled, and BU’s Given Kalipinde knocked down 1-2 free throws, giving the Hawks a chance with :10.1 left in the game. Del Bene brought the ball past midcourt and called a timeout. Out of the timeout, Del Bene caught the inbound pass and dribbled to the right side, delivering a pass into Mylleville in the post. Mylleville drove to his left into the lane, went up, and the ball was knocked away as time expired and BU holding the 62-60 advantage.
SDC was led by Rodriguez with 13 points while Del Bene added 11 points. Tim Sanders (pictured left) had 8 points and 6 assists.
SDC shot 43.4% (23-53) from the field for the game, while the Eagles connected on 51.2% (22-43) of their shots. The Hawks were only 4-11 from the free throw line while Biola connected on 14-21 attempts from the charity stripe.
