Azusa, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team fell behind quickly, battled back to take the lead briefly in the second half, only to see the timely shooting swing the game in favor of #7 Azusa Pacific University in a 69-60 loss to the Cougars Friday night

The loss is the fifth single digit loss this season for the Hawks, and sends SDC to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the GSAC. With the win, the Cougars move to 15-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play.

APU jumped out to a 9-1 lead within the first five minutes of play and built their lead to 21-7 at the 10:11 mark in the first half. SDC responded with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to cut the Cougar lead to 21-20.

APU was able to maintain their lead the rest of the first half, with the Hawks matching shot for shot. The Cougars were able to push the lead to 32-26 right before half with a pair of buckets in the final minute.

The Hawks struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 32.0% (8-25).

The Hawks came out gunning in the second half, jumping out to an 11-4 run and captured their only lead of the night at 37-36 on a Tim Sanders jumper with 15:37 left in the contest. The Cougars responded by scoring on five of their next six possessions to retake the lead.

APU looked to be taking control late in the game when a 9-2 run pushed their lead back to double digits at 58-48. The resilience of the SDC team was revealed again by using tough defensive stands and cutting the lead back to a one possession game when Johnny Del Bene nailed a three pointer to make the APU lead 58-55 with 4:27 left in the game.

SDC kept working to complete the comeback, but the Cougars converted 9-11 free throws in the waning minutes to keep the lead out of reach.

The Hawks were led by Sanders with 15 points and 7 rebounds. In addition, Calvin Seaberry added 11 points off the bench and Benji Arvizu had 10 points.

The Hawks shot 40% from the field (20-50) for the game, including shooting 48% (12-25) in the second half.

SDC continues play against Biola on Tuesday, January 24th at 7:30pm
