]El Cajon, Calif. --
Looking to avoid their first losing streak of the season, the San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team could not fend off a hot shooting Fresno Pacific Sunbird squad, falling 75-73 on Saturday night. On a night where SDC’s Brittany Daniel had her third straight 20 point game, FPU shot 56.6% (30-53), including 63.5% (15-24) in the first half, to leave the Ryan Athletic Center with a win.
The loss, SDC’s third loss in as many games, drops the Lady Hawks to 13-5 overall and 2-4 in the GSAC. The Lady Sunbirds move to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the GSAC.
“We didn’t come out with the energy and fire that we needed to,” said Head Coach Kelsey Dillon. “Defensively, we were lacking all game. While we scored enough to win, we are not getting the well rounded production that we have had all season.”
Dillon added, “We need to learn how to bear down and finish the last five minutes of the game. Defensive stops are key and every possession is vital.”
Neither team was able to take a large advantage early in the first half, with SDC holding their biggest lead of the half at 20-17 with 9:26 remaining until halftime. FPU responded with a 14-2 run to build 31-22 lead with 5:05 left. The Lady Hawks clawed back with a modest 9-2 run over the next three minutes and were able to cut the Sunbird lead to 39-35 at the break.
Both teams exchanged buckets coming out of the locker room, with FPU pushing their lead to 45-37 at the 18:23 mark. SDC’s bounced right back with a 9-0 run behind three pointers from Brittany Robinson (pictured left) and Hannah Miller, and an old fashioned three point play by Daniel. The game continued to be tight the rest of the game, with neither team able to build a lead larger than four in a half that saw the game tied six times.
SDC built their biggest lead at 68-64 with 4:13 remaining in the game on a Jermani Stewart layup. FPU scored on consecutive possessions, and hitting a three pointer to take a 69-68 lead. SDC responded with a Daniel bucket, only to see the Sunbirds take the lead back on their next possession.
Daniel tied the game at 71-71 with a free throw with less than a minute remaining. FPU’s Keairra White nailed a jumper to push the Sunbirds in front 73-71 with :42 left in the game. The Lady Hawks were unable to convert and FPU pushed the lead to four with :12 remaining. SDC was able to get a quick bucket on a layup from Miller on a pass from Daniel, but FPU was able to dribble the clock out and take escape with the win.
SDC was led by Daniel with a season high 26 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel also added six steals. Robinson added 14 points and Miller had 13 points.
The Lady Hawks forced 21 turnovers, but struggled from the field, shooting 27-71 for the game.
Dillon continued, “We need to get back to that fired up, confident, team basketball that we played the majority of the first 15 games.”
SDC continues their season on the road at Hope International on Tuesday, January 17th at 5:30.
