A hot shooting second half for the Vanguard Lions pushed the visitors to victory on Tuesday night, as San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team couldn’t find an answer for the Lions 61.9% shooting from the field in the second half, falling 73-61 at the Ryan Athletic Center .
The wins sends Vanguard to 10-6 overall and 2-3 in the GSAC. SDC falls to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the GSAC.
VU started the game on an 11-3 run before SDC used consecutive buckets from Raphael Rodriguez to kick start an 11-0 run and claim a 14-11 lead with 14:46 left in the first half. The score remained close until VU went on a small 9-2 run to take an eight point lead at 34-26. The Hawks bounced right back with a run of their own, scoring the next 10 points to take a lead with just over a minute to play in the first half. The Lions were able to convert on a late possession of the first half and tie the game at 36-36 going into the locker room.
The second half started the same as the first, with the Lions going on a run to get things going. This time, VU went on an 11-2 run to grab a 47-38 lead with 12:59 remaining in the game. Throughout the second half, SDC made small runs to cut into the Lion lead. However, every time the Hawks would get something going, VU would put a stop to it a bucket of their own. The Lions were efficient from deep, connecting on 5-7 three pointers in the second half.
The Hawks were led Calvin Seaberry with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Johnny Del Bene added 11 points and Raphael Rodriguez had 10 points.
The Lions had four players score in double figues, including Christopher Raybon with 17 points.
For the game, SDC shot 43.9% (25-57) from the field. The Hawks shot well in the first half, connecting on 53.3% of shots (16-30). Things went cold in the second half, with SDC only making 33.3% (9-27) shots.
The Hawks continue their season, hosting Fresno Pacific on Saturday, January 14th at 5:00pm.
