The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team drew another game against a top 10 opponent on Tuesday night, hosting the #10 rated Vanguard Lions. The Lady Hawks, coming off an emotional 67-63 loss to #4 Westmont on Saturday, gave the Lions all they could handle before the Lions went on a late run to distance themselves and escape the Ryan Athletic Center with a 74-66 win.
VU moves to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the GSAC. SDC, who drops consecutive games for the first time this season, falls to 13-4 overall and 2-3 in the GSAC.
VU jumped out quickly in the first half, going on a 15-5 run to start the game. The Lady Hawks responded with a 9-0 to cut the lead to 15-14 with 9:59 left in the first half. The Lady Lions then went on a run of their own, pushing their lead to back to double figures at 28-18 with just over five minutes left in the half. SDC was able to cut the lead to five and went into the locker room trailing 36-31.
The Lady Hawks came out in the second half and continued to chip away at the VU lead. SDC made it a one possession game at 45-43 when Jasmin Thomas jumped in front of a Lion pass for a steal and hit a streaking Brittany Robinson for a layup with 13:43 remaining. Both teams kept exchanging buckets for the next nine minutes, with the Lions keeping their lead between one and three points. SDC finally tied the game with 4:00 left, when Brittany Daniel (pictured left) nailed a jumper and was fouled to cut the lead to one. Daniel promptly knocked down the free throw to tie the game at 56-56.
Following the Daniel free throw, Vanguard scored on their next four possessions without an SDC response. The Lions pushed their lead to 12 with just over :30 seconds left in the game but a pair of late Robinson three pointers cut the final score to single digits.
SDC was led by Daniel with 24 points and 12 rebounds while Robinson added 17 points.
As a team, SDC shot 22-60 (36.7%) from the field for the game and VU won the rebounding battle 48-32.
