Hot shooting by Westmont College doomed the San Diego Christian College men’s basketball team on Saturday night, as Warriors shot 61.9% from the field en route to a 86-61 win.
Westmont moves to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the GSAC. SDC falls to 4-7 overall and 0-4 in the GSAC.
In the first half, SDC took a 5-4 lead early when Tim Sanders drilled a three pointer off an assist from Benji Arvizu. Westmont responded to take a 7-5 lead before Arvizu would tie the game back up at 7-7 on a pair of free throws. It would be the last time the game would be tied.
Both teams went back and forth with the Warriors holding a 16-14 lead with 11:40 left in the first half after a Calvin Seaberry bucket. WC would then outscore the Hawks 28-9 the rest of the first half to take a commanding 44-23 lead into halftime.
The Hawks struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 29.2% (7-24) from the field.
SDC was unable to cut significantly into the Warrior lead in the second half, and Westmont pulled away with an 86-61 win.
The Hawks were paced by three players in double figures. Johnny Del Bene led the way with 12 points, while Sanders and Arvizu had 11 points each.
For the game, SDC shot 38.6% (22-57) from the field, while the Warriors made 26-42 (61.9%) shots. The Hawks, playing without starting forward Xavier Mylleville who suffered a concussion in Tuesday’s game against Point Loma, were outscored in the paint 20-4 in the first half and 30-18 for the game.
SDC continues GSAC play on Tuesday, hosting Vanguard with tipoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
