San Diego, Calif. --A second half comeback by the San Diego Christian College Hawks against crosstown foe Point Loma Nazarene University fell just short as the Sea Lions hit a trifecta of three pointers late and took the game 55-54.

The loss sends SDC to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the GSAC. PLNU moves to 8-4 overall and 1-2 in the GSAC.

PLNU jumped up quickly in the first half behind a 12-2 run to take a 17-7 advantage halfway through the first half. SDC responded with a 13-6 run to cut the Sea Lions’ lead to 23-20 after a pair of Xavier Mylleville free throws with 6:45 remaining in the first half. The first half went back and forth with PLNU claiming a 34-29 lead heading into the locker room.

The Hawks started quickly in the second half as Kevin Dawson drilled a jumper and Johnny Del Bene nailed a three pointer to tie the game at 34-34. The Hawks took the lead with 13:20 left in the game, when Del Bene knocked down another three off an assist from Dawson, giving the Hawks a 42-40 advantage.

A tight defensive game saw neither team take complete control, but the Hawks remained in front and took a 48-44 lead after a pair of Del Bene free throws. The Sea Lions’ Wil Bush connected from deep to cut the Hawks lead to one, but SDC responded with Benji Arvizu’s old fashioned three point play. PLNU again hit a three pointer to cut the Hawk’s lead to 51-50. After a defensive stop, the Sea Lions drilled a three pointer on their third consecutive possession to move in front 53-51.

SDCC again responded when Dawson was able to convert a three point play to send SDC into the lead at 54-53 with 3:08 remaining in the game. On the ensuing possession, Todd Campbell knocked down a jumper off a Rhett Beal assist to give the Sea Lions a 55-54 lead.

The Hawks had their opportunities, as the following possession saw SDC have three chances to score after grabbing offensive rebounds. The Hawks had one final chance after forcing a turnover, but Arvizu’s shot attempt was blocked and the clock expired with the Sea Lions in the lead.

The Hawks were led by Dawson and Del Bene. Dawson dropped a season high 20 points on 8-13 shooting. Del Bene added 17 points and connected on 3-5 three pointers.

As a team, SDC shot 47.5% (19-40) from the field and won the rebounding battle 28-17. PLNU forced 20 SDC turnovers which led to 23 points. The evenly matched game saw five ties and six lead changes.

The Hawks play at NCAA #24 San Diego State in an exhibition on Thursday night at 7:05pm.
