] San Bernardino, Calif. --
The San Diego Christian College Lady Hawks basketball team continued their early season success, defeating NCAA Division II Cal State San Bernardino on Wednesday night 71-65. The game was considered an exhibition for SDCC, but counted as regular season game for the Coyotes.
SDCC rallied behind leading scorers Brittany Robinson (pictured left) and Brittany Daniel, who combined for almost half of the Lady Hawks' points. The win is the first for SDCC in the previous eight meetings against the Coyotes, who are coming off an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament last season.
SDCC fell behind early, but fought back and took the lead on a Brittany Daniel jumper with 12:13 left in the first half. That bucket was part of a 14-2 run that put The Lady Hawks in front for good. CSUSB cut the lead to 26-22 with 6:40 remaining in the first half. SDCC responded with an 11-4 to close out the first half with a 37-26 lead.
SDCC used nine offensive rebounds to tack on 14 second chance points in the first half.
The Coyotes started to piece a comeback together in the second half, going on a 15-5 run to cut the lead to 49-47 with 9:34 to play. SDCC countered with a pair of free throws from Robinson and a jumper from Jasmin Thomas.
The Coyotes came right back with a pair of buckets to slice the league down to two again. The Lady Hawks promptly stretched the lead out on consecutive three pointers from Hannah Miller and Heather Serven off assists from Thomas. SDCC built the lead back up to double digits with just over two minutes left in the game on a pair of free throws from Thomas.
CSUSB scored the next seven points, leaving SDCC up 67-64. Miller converted the front end of a 1 and 1 with 1:02 remaining. On the miss, Serven grabbed the offensive rebound for SDCC and was fouled. Serven knocked down both free throws to put the game away.
Robinson led SDCC with 18 points and 8 rebounds, while Daniel added 17 points and 7 assists. Thomas chipped in with 12 points and Serven had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks’ defense forced CSUSB into a poor shooting night, only shooting 32.8% (22-67) from the field.
