El Cajon, Calif. --The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team continued their early season success on Saturday evening, defeating the University of La Verne for the second time in five days 57-46. The win moves SDCC to 7-2 overall on the early season.
Both teams struggled early, with ULV clinging to an 8-7 lead at the 13:39 minute mark; however, the Leopards would not score the rest of the first half. SDCC would close out the first half on a 15-0 run to head into the locker room with a 22-8 lead. Both teams struggled from the field in the first half, with the SDCC shooting 33.3% (9-27) and ULV shooting a dismal 8.3% (3-36).
The Leopards came out of the locker room and went on a 13-6 run to cut the Lady Hawks lead to 28-21. SDCC responded with buckets from Brittany Robinson and Sabrina Jimenez (pictured left) to push the lead back into double digits. The closest ULV would get was six at 36-30, but the Lady Hawks refused to let the lead slip any further and closed the game out matching ULV bucket for bucket down the stretch.
The Lady Hawks were led by Brittany Daniel with 14 points. Michelle Gonzalez gave the Lady Hawks a huge lift off the bench with 10 points and also grabbed 9 rebounds from the point guard position. Robinson added 9 points and Jasmin Thomas chipped in 8 points, including drilling a jumper as time expired in the first half. Jermani Stewart continued to control the glass with 11 rebounds.
For the game, SDCC shot 36.7% from the field, and only connected on 1-16 three point attempts. The Lady Hawks also grabbed 50 team rebounds.
