El Cajon, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team tipped off their season on Thursday night, falling in a double overtime thriller 91-88 to La Sierra University. It was a game of ups and downs, including seeing the short-handed Lady Hawks battle back at both the end of regulation and the first overtime to tie the game. SDCC, playing with only 8 players, fought through the adversity to nearly take the game.
SDCC (0-1) controlled much of the first half, including building a lead of 21-11. LSU came back and went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 21. SDCC stretched the lead to 34-27 heading into half, behind 13 points from Junior Brittany Daniel.
The second half was much like the first, with the score remaining close, but with SDCC remaining in the lead until the 7:27 mark, when LSU captured a 52-51 lead. LSU built their lead to 64-57 with 1:34 left in the game, when SDCC came firing back. Brittany Robinson (pictured left) grabbed a rebound and took the ball coast to coast for a layup to cut the lead to five, at 64-59. Robinson then drilled a jumper on the next possession. Heather Serven then stole a pass in the full court press and hit Robinson, who dribbled into the lane and was fouled on the shot. Robinson converted 1 of 2 free throws to cut the LSU lead to two. With :15 left, LSU’s Audrey Bukala missed a front end of the 1 and 1. Senior Jasmin Thomas grabbed the rebound and brought it up the court and hit Daniel with a pass. Daniel spun into the lane and dropped the ball in with just :01 on the clock to send the game to overtime.
The first overtime saw LSU maintain the lead the majority of the period, including taking a four point advantage with :54 left. After a missed shot by Robinson, Melissa Beatty grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled putting the shot back up. Beatty promptly drained both free throws to cut the lead to two with :36 left. SDCC’s defensive pressure kept LSU from scoring and Beatty was able to grab the rebound and kicked it out to Jasmin Thomas. Thomas took the ball up the court, weaving through Golden Eagles and converting a layup as time expired to send the game to a second overtime.
The second overtime was taken over by Joirdan Jones of LSU. Jones drilled two three pointers and six free throws, scoring all 12 Golden Eagle points. The Lady Hawks were forced to play the final minutes with only four players (after an early injury to Natassjia Mitchell), when Jermani Stewart, Brittany Daniel, and Brittany Robinson fouled out. SDCC had one final chance with the ball and trailing by three with :06 left. But a Heather Serven three pointer couldn’t go down and the Golden Eagles escaped with the victory.
Brittany Daniel led the Hawks with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Brittany Robinson dropped 21 points and Jasmin Thomas added 17 points for SDCC. The Lady Hawks outscored LSU in the paint 46-28.
SDCC continues their season on Saturday November 5th at The University of San Diego in an exhibition.
