El Cajon, Calif. --The San Diego Christian College women’s basketball team is looking to continue their progression forward in 2011-2012, with the addition of six newcomers and seven returners, including four starters. The Lady Hawks will feature a combination of youth and experience, as they feature five upperclassmen, four sophomores, and two freshmen.
“We have a lot of athletic players,” said Head Coach Kelsey Dillon. “We brought in some height to fit with our shooters. With our returners and recruits, we want to take it to the next level.”
The Hawks look to seniors Jasmin Thomas, Brittany Robinson, and Juanita Lewis to provide leadership. Robinson (picture left) led SDCC in scoring last season, averaging 13.5 points per game. Thomas, guiding the team from the point guard position, started all but one game last season and averaged 8.8 points per game while leading the team in assists (73). Lewis contributed off the bench last season, chipping in 7.9 points per game and grabbing 4.2 rebounds per game.
Other returners include sophomores Sabrina Jiminez, Heather Serven, Jermani Stewart, and Alexa Davison.
The recruiting class is highlighted by three junior college transfers: Brittany Daniel (Southwestern College) Charrdonnay Shula (Laney College) and Irene Lopez (Moorpark College). Rounding out the recruiting class, Coach Dillon added two freshman: Melissa Beatty (Lawndale, CA) and Natassjia Mitchell (San Diego,CA).
The Lady Hawks’ schedule features 10 games against teams ranked that finished the season in the top 25 in the NAIA. The SDCC women also head on the road in exhibitions against NCAA Division II National Tournament participant Cal State San Bernadino and NCAA Division I University of San Diego of the West Coast Conference.
"We are excited about this season and our competition,” said Coach Kelsey Dillon. “We worked hard to get a balanced preLookconference schedule. Our goal was to make sure we had good competition that would prepare us for conference play, but to go into GSAC play with a winning record."
Our non-conference schedule will give us a good idea heading into GSAC play of where were currently are compared to where we have been in the past.”
The Lady Hawks tip off the season on Thursday, November 3rd at home versus La Sierra University.
