Tue., Oct 25th, 2011 El Cajon, Calif. --In a season of highs and lows, the San Diego Christian
College men’s soccer team finished their season on a high after knocking off
Bethesda University of California in overtime 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon. The win
helped the Hawks end with confidence after taking the final two games of the
season.
“This was a great win for us,” said Assistant Coach Donald
Laing. “We lost a lot of close games, so it was nice for the guys to see the
hard work pay off with a victory.
BUC struck first in the 33rd minute to jump up
1-0 on a shot just outside of the box.
SDCC responded when when a shot by Victor Flores was batted
down by a BUC defender's hand in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Leandro
Vianna. Vianna promptly placed the ball in the back of the net to knot the game
at 1-1.
SDCC’s second goal came when Jordan Abad hit Justin Picou
down the left side of the box. Picou dribbled and passed to Emmanuel Onywera who
snuck the ball past the goalkeeper to put the Hawks up 2-1.
The Flames scratched a goal in the final minute of
regulation to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, SDCC took the game when goalkeeper
Alex Cozzi saved a BUC shot and fired the ball down the left to Salvador
Velesquez. Velesquez dribbled past midfield and delivered a pass down the
middle to a streaking Onywera who knocked it past the keeper for the game
winner.
The Hawks conclude their season at 5-11-1.
“It is good to end the season with a pair of wins,” said
Head Coach Carlos Calderson. “We showed that we can do it, we just need to
start playing this well earlier in the year. This is a nice confidence boost
moving forward.”
