] El Cajon, Calif. --
Coming off the first conference win of the season Saturday, the San Diego Christian College men’s soccer team was looking to continue the momentum heading into their game with Hope International University on Tuesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Hawks saw the momentum slip away late in the first half, falling to the Royals 3-1.
The loss sends SDCC to 3-9-1 (1-5 GSAC) while HIU improves to 5-6-1 (2-4 GSAC).
The Hawks started the game where they left off on Saturday, scoring just two minutes in. Sophomore midfielder Leandro Vianna delivered a free kick from near midfield to the left side of the goal where Junior Victor Flores was there to knock in his second goal in as many games to give SDCC a 1-0 lead.
SDCC would remain in front until the Royals scored a pair of goals in a five minute stretch; one in the 30th minute and one in the 35th minute.
“We had control of the game from the beginning,” said Head Coach Carlos Calderson. “We let it slip away when we lost our focus.”
The game would remain a tight battle until HIU scored again in the 50th minute.
For the game, SDCC outshot HIU 16-15, including having seven shots on goal. For SDCC, Emmanual Onywera had four shots stopped by HIU goalkeeper Jhovany Hernandez.
Calderson added, “I am disappointed with the loss. We self-destructed and let the momentum out of our hands. Luckily, we get to come out on Saturday and get another chance to get it back.
SDCC heads to Azusa Pacific on Saturday for a double header with the women. The men’s game starts at 1:00pm.
