Fullerton, Calif. --
The San Diego Christian College volleyball team’s rally fell short against the Hope Royals Tuesday night in a tough, five game loss in Fullerton. After dropping the first two games, SDCC (5-16, 0-7) battled back to take the next two before seeing the Royals win the deciding game.
The first match saw SDCC take a 13-8 lead after a 6-0 run with Senior Lauren Howard serving, including two aces from Howard. Hope responded after a timeout, but SDCC was able to extend their lead to 17-12 before a 4-0 run cut the lead to one. The Hawks then held to a 20-18 lead, but the Royals pieced together another 4-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. SDCC was unable to pull any closer and the Royals closed out the game 25-23.
After dropping the second game, SDCC was able to shift the momentum behind the attack from Howard and Mariah Boelk. Howard and Boelk combined for nine kills in the game and SDCC took the game 25-18.
The fourth game picked up where the third left off, with SDCC jumping out to a quick 5-0 advantage. The Hawks continued to build the lead to 16-7 before winning the game 25-15 and hitting .280.
The deciding game started off with an SDCC point before Hope went on a 7-1 run to take a 7-2 lead. The lead continued to build to 12-7 before the Hawks refused to go quietly, scoring four straight points to cut the lead to one. The rally could not be sustained, however, and the Royals closed out the match 15-12.
SDCC was paced by Lauren Howard with 12 kills and Lauren Phillips with 11 kills. In addition, Cassidy Mertens had 31 assists and 10 digs, while Stephanie Rice contributed with 24 digs and Terra Klem added 8 digs.
SDCC continues play at home on Saturday versus Biola University at 7:00pm.
