El Cajon, Calif. -- The competition for the San Diego Christian College women’s volleyball team continues to be among the toughest in the country, as the Lady Hawks welcomed another top 10 rated team (the third in the past four games) to the Ryan Athletic Center Saturday night. This time, it was the #8 rated Azusa Pacific University Cougars, who defeated the SDCC (5-15, 0-6) 25-21, 25-13, 25-12.
The first game saw the Hawks take the Cougars to the limit, before falling late. SDCC jumped out to a quick 6-2 on kills by Lauren Howard and Shelby Broberg (pictured left--18). After building a lead to 7-3, APU quickly went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 9-7. The Lady Hawks refused to fold and kept exchanging points with the highly rated Cougars. SDCC used an attack led by setters Cassidy Mertens (picture left--13) and Rachel Allen, who assisted on over half of the SDCC points in the first game. A Lauren Phillips kill gave the Hawks their final lead at 19-18, before APU went on a 7-2 run to close out game one. SDCC finished the game with a .303 attack percentage.
Game two began the way game one ended, with both sides exchanging points. SDCC kept the game in striking distance after a Phillips kill off an Allen assist, cutting the APU lead to 10-9. The Cougars then took control and went on a 15-4 run to end the game 25-13.
The Cougars carried over their play into the final game, starting out quickly and not looking back as they posted an attack percentage of .429 and took the game 25-12.
Rachel Allen and Lauren Phillips both posted seven kills to lead the team. Mertens and Allen combined for 27 assists for the Hawks.
SDCC continues their season on Tuesday, when they travel to Hope International University for a 7:00pm first serve.
