Riverside, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian College men’s soccer team was looking to finish off non-GSAC play on a strong note Thursday night, but was thwarted in a 2-1 loss on the road versus La Sierra University.
The Tigers got on the board first when Shane Shelton scored on a pass from David Nolan in the 22nd minute. The rest of the physical first half continued and the Hawks (2-5-1) were unable to get on the board in the first frame, finding La Sierra up 1-0 at the break.
The game continued to be physical, but remained within striking distance until Shelton scored his second goal of the game on a header off of a corner kick from David Nolan. SDCC had six shots on goal for the game, but were unable to score until the final seconds. Sophomore Leandro Vienna converted a penalty kick to get the Hawks on the board. Shortly thereafter, however, the final whistle blew and it was too late to mount a comeback.
Alex Cozzi played all 90 minutes at goalkeeper for SDCC, tallying four saves.
La Sierra outshot SDCC by one (13-12). In addition, the game saw a total of eight cautions being handed out between the two teams and a combined 42 fouls (29 from LSU).
The Hawks continue GSAC play and travel down the 8 freeway to battle Point Loma Nazarene University on Wednesday, October 8th at 1:30pm.
