The San Diego Christian College volleyball team exchanged points with Westmont College for much of the match on Saturday afternoon, but late runs in each game ended up swinging the match in favor of the visiting Warriors.
In the closely contested game one, Westmont took a quick 5-0 lead. SDCC fought back and took the lead at 16-13 on a block by Aja Walker and Shelby Broberg. The Warriors eventully took the lead 24-21, when the Hawks took advatage of two Warrior errors to cut the lead to 24-23. Westmont then used a kill from Madison Serrano to take game 25-23.
The second game saw the Hawks cut the lead to 17-15 before the Warriors used an 8-5 run to take the game 25-20.
Both teams exchanged points for much of the third game, with SDCC holding a 12-11 lead and the Hawks keeping the game within striking distance at 17-18. Westmont proved to be too much again late in a game, as they closed the match with 8 unanswered points.
For the match, SDCC was led by Lauren Howard (11 kills) and Lauren Phillips (10 kills). Cassidy Mertens added 28 assists while Terra Klem chipped in with 12 digs.
The Hawks continue their season September 27th at Vanguard Unversity.
