Sacramento, CA--The San Diego Christian College Volleyball team was looking for some payback and a stop to a short losing streak on Friday. They were able to accomplish both with a five game win over Arizona Christian University (21-25, 25-18, 26-24, 18-25, 15-11). The evenly matched squads played in the initial match of the season, with the Firestorm winning that battle in five games.
The Hawks had a steady offensive attack with Lauren Howard leading the way with 10 kills, 11 digs, and 4 solo blocks, while Aja Walker and Mariah Boelk had 9 kills each in the win over the Firestorm. Walker and Boelk were proficient in their kills with Walker posting a .375 attack percentage and Boelk with .563 attack percentage. Cassidy Mertens contributed with 36 assists in the win.
“The team really rallied together for the win,” said Coach April Fisk. “It took a well rounded effort from every player to win the match.”
The afternoon matchup saw the Hawks fall to the Oaks of Menlo College in four games. After SDCC won the first game (25-22), Menlo was able to sweep the next three (25-18, 26-24, 25-20).
Howard paced the Hawks with 19 kills and a .359 attack percentage, in addition to 10 digs. Mertens continued her consistent play with a staggering 38 assists while Stephanie Rice led the team with 14 digs.
SDCC continues play in the Warrior Classic at William Jessup University on Saturday, September 10.
