The San Diego Christian College men’s soccer team collected their first win of the season and came out on top of a 2-1 win over Southern Nazarene University (Oklahoma) on Thursday afternoon.
The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game when the speedy Captain Emmanuel Onywera split two defenders and received a long pass from Jordan Abad. Immediately, Onywera was able to put the ball past goalkeeper Blake Anderson for his first goal of the season.
The Crimson Storm were able to tie the game in the 27 minute when Javier Caballeros put a ball in the back of the net after Blake Rodgers’ shot ricocheted off the cross bar. The game would head to half time tied 1-1.
SDCC came out of the half with an added fire and scored in less than a minute. Frankie Zimmerman was able to put the Hawks ahead for good with a header off of a corner kick from Victor Flores. “We got the corner kick and set it up like coach wanted us to and it worked perfect,” said Zimmerman. “Victor was really on today, like he always is, and it was great to get the assist from him.”
“It was awesome to put us ahead. “
The Hawks had numerous attempts to add to the lead, but missed opportunities and the play by goalkeeper Anderson kept the score 2-1 until the final whistle. For the game, SDCC outshot SNU 17-9, and had 9 shots on goal.
The Hawks look to carry on this momentum when they resume play after a week off.
“It feels great to get a win after starting the season with two losses,” Zimmerman added. “We are excited to get the win and it gives us a confidence to know that we can get it done.”
The SDCC men continue their season on Monday, September 12th against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (AZ).
