Santa Clarita, CA--The San Diego Christian College volleyball team rebounded after a difficult first two days of The Master’s College Melee and salvaged the final two matches last weekend with wins over Simpson College and Cardinal Strich University (Wisconsin).
Thursday saw the Lady Hawks drop matches to Corbin University (Oregon) 25-18, 25-14, 25-15 and University of Great Falls (Montana) 25-20, 25-16, 25-22. In the match against Great Falls, SDCC was led by Senior Lauren Howard with 11 kills and six digs. In addition, Junior Rachel Allen and Sophomore Cassidy Mertens had 13 assists each. Stephanie Rice added nine digs to lead the Hawks.
In the match against Corbin, SDCC struggled to get going, and had a .037 attack percentage in the initial game. Things did not get much better for the Lady Hawks, as they registered 22 kills and 22 errors as a team.
“Thursday was a tough day for us; however, we got better throughout the day,” said Coach April Fisk. “When the day was over, we met as a team and realized that what each individual was giving was not their maximum effort. The girls decided that Friday was going to be a new day and that as a team they were going to give even more than what was expected of them.“
“It worked out pretty well for us.”
It certainly did. The Lady Hawks showed new life on Friday with five set wins in both matches. The first match against Simpson College saw the Lady Hawks win 25-15, 17-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-6. SDCC had three players in double figures in kills (Howard—16, Phillips—12, and Allen—10) while Allen also chipped in with 23 assists and Mertens added 15 assists. In a sign of the Lady Hawks determined focus, SDCC also had three players in double figures in digs (Rice—14, Jessica Brazynets—14, and Mertens—12).
Against Cardinal Stritch, SDCC dropped a tough first game 25-22. After winning the second game 25-18, the Lady Wolves took the third match 25-21. Determined not to let the game slip away, the Lady Hawks took the fourth game 25-20 and the fifth 15-11.
Howard led the SDCC attack with 25 kills while Freshman Lauren Phillips added 17 kills. Mertens contributed with 26 assists and Allen had 25 assists. Rice had 18 digs in the match.
Coach Fisk was elated with the performance on the final day of the tournament adding, “Friday was a successful day for us. We still didn’t play our best but we persevered through two tough matches in a very hot gym. The girls dug in deep and were not going to accept anything less than success. “
“As their coach I was excited to see them work to be patient throughout the matches and push point by point to finish the match. Winning any five game match is something to be proud of and we did it twice in one day. We are excited to build on what we started this next weekend at the Concordia Labor Day Tournament.”
The Lady Hawks will be at the Asics Crowne Plaza Labor Day tournament hosted by Concordia University this Friday and Saturday.
