The San Diego Christian College men’s soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to GSAC-opponent Point Loma Nazarene Tuesday afternoon, 2-1, in a non-conference tilt. The Hawks (0-2-0) battled to a 1-0 lead in the first half, only to see the Sea Lions (2-0-0) score on a penalty kick in the 70th minute and again with less than seven minutes to play to pull out the victory.
SDC struck first, with beautiful ball movement and a final pass from Redshirt Freshman Juan Valdivia to Senior All-NCAA Region performer Jordan Abad for Abad’s first goal of the year. In the first stanza, the Hawks outshot the Sea Lions 6-2 and controlled the ball much of the first half.
As the second half began, things continued to go SDC’s way, as they kept pounding shots at PLNU’s goalkeeper, Carter Phillips. Phillips play was stellar, and kept the Hawks at bay all afternoon with seven saves, including four on shots from SDC’s Junior Captain Emmanuel Onywera.
Momentum shifted in the 70th minute when the Hawks lost a man due to a red card. Off a free kick, a foul was committed in the box, setting up a penalty kick. PLNU took advantage as Jeff Serbin placed the ball in the right side of the net, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Cameron Riley.
The Hawks final chances came in the form of Onywera, who had two shots in the 73rd minute, including a breakaway in which Phillips got his fingertips on to knock away.
In the 83rd minute, PLNU set up for a corner kick from Niko Acosta. Acosta delivered a ball to the far side of the box that was headed in by Paul Malherbe for the game winning goal.
For the game, the Hawks outshot the Sea Lions 16-7, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
SDCC hosts Southern Nazarene University on Thursday, September 1 at 4:00pm.
