The San Diego Christian College men’s soccer team dropped their 2011 opener in a hard fought battle in the east San Diego heat to the Menlo College Oaks. “It was a tough, physical game and we just came up on the short end,” said head coach Carlos Calderson. “We got beat by a good team.”
The Hawks were not without opportunities. The first half saw the Hawks out-shoot the Oaks 18-7 (in addition to shots from Junior Justin Picou and Junior Emmanual Onywera that hit the crossbar), only to see SDCC trailing 1-0 at intermission after a goal from Menlo’s Dylan Crist in the 25th minute.
The second half saw both team continue the physical play, and neither team gaining ground until the 70th minute when SDCC got on the board. Junior forward Justin Picou delivered a beautiful cross to sophomore Fidias Monzon, who promptly placed the ball in the back of the net for the first goal of the season.
Late in the 2nd half, Menlo took advantage of a foul just outside the box in the 85th minute. Matheus Barbosa lofted the freekick into the top left corner, just over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Cameron Riley for the game winner.
For the game, SDCC outshot Menlo 28-18. Sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Riley played all 90 minutes for the Hawks and recorded six saves.
Despite the loss, Calderson remains encouraged. “I am really proud of the way the guys battled out there. We can take a lot of from this game and build for the rest of the season.”
The Hawks continue their season next Tuesday at home versus Point Loma Nazarene in a non-conference affair.
