El Cajon, CA--The 2010 SDCC Lady Hawks soccer season was a tale of two vastly different seasons: the non-conference and conference schedules. Against non-conference completion, the Lady Hawks went 4-3-1, including a 2-1 win over eventual GPAC Champion and National Championship runner-up Hastings College (Neb.) and a tie against the number 2 ranked Point Loma Nazarene in a non-conference affair. However, the GSAC schedule was not kind to SDCC, as the Lady Hawks posted a record of 0-8-2, with ties coming against Point Loma Nazarene and Biola.
The Lady Hawks will have a different look on the sideline, as former Head Coach Danny Salas resigned over the summer to take a position as Athletic Director at a local high school. Salas was replaced by Carlos Calderson, who jumped into the position in Late July, leaving little time to finish recruiting and implement any changes. Luckily for Calderson, Salas had recruited a strong class for the current year, in addition to developing current players to compete well against GSAC competition.
The Lady Hawks are paced by senior Hannah Waggoner. Waggoner is a two-time All-GSAC performer (2008 & 2010) and led SDCc in goals and points in 2008 and 2010. In addition to Waggoner, the Lady Hawks will look to seniors Katelyn Ogle (GK), Kellie Brakebill (D), Melissa Avalos (M/D), Mireya Flores (M), and Nicole Quintanilla (CM), to provide leadership to the squad.
Senior Nicole Quintanilla stated that team unity is an important piece to this year’s team. “I feel the team is more united this year. We are striving to grow closer to each other and closer to God. “ In addition to senior leadership, Calderson’s team includes five sophomores (Chelsie Lee, Kathlynn Reynoso, Chelsea Sewell, and transfer Kelley Boes) and a strong recruiting class of nine freshmen (Ashley Jarosin, Carmen Wheeler, Elya Jasper, Evelyn Navarro, Gabrielle Kelley, Leticia Morales, Zoar Gonzalez, Chelsie Nakasone, and Emily Wilson).
The Lady Hawks soccer team kicks off their season on Thursday, August 25th at home versus Point Park University (PA).
