] Lakeside, Calif. --
The final home games and Senior Day for the San Diego Christian College (6-38,4-29 GSAC) Hawks ended in two losses, 15-8 and 9-1, against No. 14 Fresno Pacific University (29-16,22-12 GSAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Under the shadow of professional scouts, the Hawks worked Fresno Pacific's top starter Jesse Darrah (6-1) for four runs on six hits through four innings. In the fifth, Darrah (10 H, 8 R, 3 BB, 6 K) got the backing of a five first-pitch hits and a home run giving him a 10-4 lead to work with. Hawks starter Nick Bando (6 H, 8 R, 5 BB) would get nudged out of the game that inning, making it through 4, but was responsible for all 8 runs that crossed the plate up to that point.
Senior outfielder Ryan Inverso (3-5, R, 4 RBI) hit his first and team's first grand slam over the right field fence to give the Hawks their last runs of the game, 10-8. Inverso was also a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
It was a tight battle until the top of the ninth when the Sunbirds put the win on ice with 5 runs. Senior infielder Taylor Maddox was 2-for-3 with an RBI, scoring two runs and reaching 42 hits on the season. Trevor Bloom hit his 60th hit of the season going 1-4 in game one.
Game two wasn't quite as exciting for the Hawks, getting only 5 hits off of Sunbirds pitching. The early innings were close, but FPU slowly distanced themselves to an 8 run lead. Starter Matt Mazzoni (7-1) held the Hawks to one run in seven innings, walking two and striking out five. Senior Austin Minton (9 H, 8 R, 5 BB, 4 K), now 0-5, held on for six and two-thirds before being pushed out of the game by FPU's four run 7th.
