] Lakeside, Calif. --
The NAIA Division I No. 3 California Baptist University (27-9, 14-7 GSAC) stuck it out for the 8-5 win, despite San Diego Christian's (5-18, 3-13 GSAC) big four inning in the sixth.
The Hawks faced CBU's 1.92 era ace, Taylor Siemen's (7-1), tagging him for four earned runs by games end in second complete game of the year. SDC 's starter, sophomore Nick Bando went three innings, striking out two before coming out the game.
The CBU fourth found the Hawks intentionally loading the bases with no outs, only to walk in the games first run with one out. The threat ended with the Hawks second inning ending double play, started by second baseman, Dominic Neocoechea.
Another bases loaded situation in the top of the fifth didn't fair so well for SDC as CBU knocked in four runs on five hits. The Lancers Kevin Odom posted their 6th run on his fifth homer of the year in the 6th, still holding the Hawks scoreless.
The tide turned for SDC in the bottom of the 6th, starting with a lead off hit from Mike Bando (2-5, double, run) that resulted in a four run inning, cutting the Lancers lead to two. Unfortunately, two runs in the eighth capped the win for CBU, despite the run the Hawks put up in the 9th.
Five different Hawks knocked in an RBI a piece, totaling 8 hits, while on the defensive side, used eight pitchers. Senior Joe Cuttone took the loss, going one and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.
Cal Baptist returns to Stars Field on Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm for the second game in the Hawks homestand.
