Lakeside, Calif. -- It was three up three down for the first four innings of the Tuesday meeting between Biola University (15-9, 9-3 GSAC) and San Diego Christian (4-14, 2-9 GSAC), but a breakout fifth inning for Biola gave them the eventual 7-1 game one win.
After four innings of retiring the side, Brock Heerdt gave up the games first single to Mac Sullivan to lead off the fifth. Two hits later, BU had the first two runs. With another three hits, the Eagles took a four run lead into the 6th.
BU's Kevin Ryan (4-0) had 5 strike outs through 4 innings before he gave up his first hit, a double to David Kazcor. An inning ending double play saved Ryan from a similar run filled inning.
Biola scored another in the sixth followed by SDC's first run on two hits, starting with an infield single from Nick Bando. The Eagles scored two more, blanking SDC in the run catergory, allowing 6 hits in the process.
Ryan (4-0) completed the nine inning appearance with 7 strike outs, giving up 1 run on 9 hits, with only 2 extra base hits. Heerdt went 5 and two thitrds innings, leaving the game with an injury. In his time he struck out two, giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits, walking one.
Bando was 3-for-4 on the day, with Kazcor coming in behind him going 2-for-4 with two doubles.
The Hawks return to Stars Field tomorrow (Mar. 17) for game two of the four game series against Biola. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
