Costa Mesa, Calif. -- San Diego Christian (4-11, 2-6) split the first two games with the Vanguard University (10-10, 6-4 GSAC) Lions on Wednesday, winning 5-4 in the first and dropping the second 7-2.
Junior Sean Sweeney (2-4, 2 RBI) drove in the first run for SDC in the second, with the second run coming in the third on a David Kazcor (3-5, RBI) single. The next two innings were about VU, who took a 3-2 lead into the top of the 7th inning. But in the top of the 7th, Mike Bando broke out of his slump with a 2-run double down the left field line to give SDC the eventual win.
Freshman righty Jeremy Blare [pictured left] pitched three innings to his first win of the year, giving starter Adair Robles the no-decision. VU reliever James McGeary was tagged with the loss, but it was the pitching staff as a whole that gave up 11 hits to SDC by games end.
Game two was a turnaround for SDC, who had 10 hits, but could only manage to get two runs, leaving 11 men on base. Bando closed the day with 3 RBI on two hits in 6 plate appearances and a .310 batting average. Starter Brock Heerdt gave up 6 runs on 7 hits through four and two-thirds innings, giving him the loss.
SDC hosts Vanguard on Saturday (Mar. 12) morning for the remaining two games of the series starting at 11:00am.
