Lakeside, Calif. -- The Hawks (2-8, 0-4 GSAC) continued play against the Point Loma Nazarene University (8-3, 3-1 GSAC) Sea Lions on Thursday afternoon hoping to pull out a win behind sophomore righty Brock Heerdt, but PLNU caught the upper hand, winning 4-1.
The first few innings were quiet, sprinkled with hits until the fifth when Rashad Taylor's double started the chain that produced the Sea Lion's first run. He struck again in the sixth, hitting his third home run, giving PLNU a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 6th, Trevor Bloom put the Hawks on the board with a shot to deep right for his second homer of the season. Unfortunately, the ninth pushed Heerdt out of the game after 117 pitches, leaving a first and third no out situation for Hawks reliever freshman Jeremy Blare. A wild pitch with after a ground out and a strikeout, put the Hawks down by three (4-1). A deep shot to right from Tyler Kuehl could have busted the gate open for the Sea Lions, but Victor Martinez made a diving snag on the warning track to end the inning.
Two out rally with the help of a passed ball, wild pitch and an infield error gave the Hawks one run, but that's all the ground they would recover.
Loma's starter Garrett Levsen carried the Sea Lions through 8 innings, giving up 1 run on 7 hits, striking out five. Maurice Wilhelm was credited with his second save of the series, third of the season.
Heerdt gave up 4 runs, three earned, on nine hits. He struck out four of the 36 batters he faced. Both junior Robert Agguire and senior David Kazcor were 2-for-3 on the day.
The Hawks travel to Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday (Mar. 5) for a double-header starting at 11:00am.
