Lakeside, Calif. -- The Hawks (2-5, 0-2 GSAC) met up with Cal State San Marcos (9-6 AII) on Tuesday afternoon for the seasons fourth game, falling 6-5.
CSUSM jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a no out two run homer from Jeremy Baum (2) off Hawks starter lefty Austin Minton. Minton, who took the eventual loss, was removed after closing out the inning, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, walking two and striking out two in the first.
In the top of the third, an error and a hit brought in the next two runs for CSUSM, but the Hawks came back with a 2 run bases loaded single from Mike Garcia in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2.
After a CSUSM run in the fifth, SDC tacked one on in the seventh on a 2 outs bases loaded wild pitch, but couldn't bring the others home in the inning. The Hawks looked to be on the rebound on a 10 pitch at bat from Taylor Maddox that produced a no out double to bring home the Hawks 4th run. A passed ball then put Maddox at third for Trevor Bloom to get his first RBI of the day on a sac fly to center.
Unfortunately that's where the Hawks offensive production was brought to a hault, awarding CSUSM's Kyle Smart the save and starter Matt Kretchmer the win. Kretchmer went five, striking out five of the 20 batters he faced. He gave up 2 runs on four hits, walking two.
The Hawks Gus Hernandez went 3-for-4, Maddox was 2-for-5 with a run and Garcia ended the day 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
SDC hosts No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene University on Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00pm for the beginning of the four game conference series.
