El Cajon, Calif. -- In a nail biter, the Hawks (8-21, 2-17 GSAC) pulled out the overtime win 83-77 on Tuesday night over the Vanguard University (17-20, 4-15 GSAC) Lions for their second GSAC win.

As it turned out, SDC's senior night was not only a celebration for the graduating five, but a spoiler for the VU clinch of a GSAC conference play off berth. Vanguard, prior to Tuesday, was in a three-way tie for a chance at the playoffs.

The win wasn't a walk in the park for SDC, who nearly fell victim to the Lions late second half comeback. SDC, after being down 32-29 at the half, held a single digit lead up until the final 18 seconds of the second half when VU's Chris Pynch hit a three that sent the game into overtime. SDC shot well from the field, (15-32), but the fouls gave VU the free throw advantage, collecting 17 points off of their 21 times at the line. By games end, they would have 25 points from 31 free throw attempts.

In the OT, SDC was near perfect, hitting 3-3 from the field, one three from Jason Starr [pictured above] and 8-9 free throws. Junior guard Benji Arvizu hit four clutch free throws at the end of the high energy overtime to ice the team win for SDC. Arvizu was 10-12 from the free throw line and 4-5 from the field for 18 points. He added five rebounds, three assists and a steal as well.

Starr kept the Hawks a float throughout the game with his momentum killing three's (4-8 3FG) finishing with 19 points (7-13 FG), 2 rebounds and two steals. Fellow senior Tyler Mutton, had three assists and 2 steals to accompany two blocks on the same play.

SDC goes on to Azusa Pacific University's campus on Saturday (Feb. 26) night to close out their season. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
