El Cajon, Calif. -- The Vanguard University (16-9, 12-7 GSAC) Lions stunned San Diego Christian (8-19, 3-16 GSAC) on Senior Night (Tues.), handing them a 70-39 loss to complement the Hawks Saturday upset over No. 21 Westmont College.
Vanguard's firey defense had the Hawks on their toes from the tipoff, but the game remained close up to the 5 minute mark. By the end of the half, VU had forced 14 SDC turnovers and hit five three's on their way to the 37-27 score. SDC's 9-30 shooting from the floor and three 3-point shots left room for second half improvement.
Unfortunately, there was a shortage on the floor for SDC in the second as they shot a mere 4-28, hitting no three's and hitting 4 of 7 from the line. VU on the other hand, continued to find the games point leader (21pts, 8-16FG, 5-7FT), Molly Pfohl under the basket stretching their lead to a game ending 31 points. Pfohl also had 8 rebounds and an assist.
For the Hawks, freshmen Jermani Daniels pulled down a team season high 12 rebounds and Heather Serven had the Hawks point high with 9 points, going 3-4 from downtown.
The Lady Hawks honored their lone senior, Melissa Villalobos [pictured above] who has been a member of the SDC squad for two years. In both years she was ranked nationally in steals and steals per game.
San Diego Christian wraps up their season on Saturday night against the No. 3 Azusa Pacific University Cougars in Azusa, California. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm PST.
