Riverside, Calif. -- A second half run brought the Hawks (7-18, 2-15 GSAC) within 12 points, but the No. 7 California Baptist University (20-7, 13-4 GSAC) Lancers dashed SDC's hopes for a third GSAC win with a 84-72 win on Tuesday night.
Right off the tip-off the Lancers determined the games tempo, kicking out a 21-4 run. The margin produced in those opening minutes sustained the Lancers throughout the game, helping them first to a 48-24 halftime score. SDC was only 6-24 (25.0%) from the floor and 11-14 at the line, while CBU shot 20-35 (57.1%) and 4-12 from downtown.
Improvement on the Hawks side (16-31, 51.6%) cut the CBU lead to 10 with 10:02 to go (63-53) in the second, but the Lancers kicked back into gear, closing out the half with 56% shooting (14-25). By games end, SDC had seen 28 free throw chances off of CBU's 23 team fouls for 21 points.
Senior Melissa Villalobos (6-14 FG, 2-4 3PT) and junior Brittany Robinson (5-13 FG, 5 asst) both ended with 16 points and 4 rebounds. CBU had four double-digit point earners totaling 60 points and 2 players with 10 or more rebounds.
The Hawks host No. 21 Westmont College on Saturday (Feb. 19) afternoon at 5:30pm.
