El Cajon, Calif. -- Saturday was a day filled with Homecoming festivity as San Diego Christian (7-17, 2-14 GSAC) celebrated their 40th anniversary as an institution. As a part of the celebration, the Hawks hosted No. 9 Biola University (20-5, 12-4 GSAC) here the Eagles won 80-70. Freshman Heather Serven [pictured left] (5-10 FG) had 16 points in the loss, hitting 4 of 8 three's.
The Hawks had a steady lead in the first half of the first, keeping ahead of BU with chances at the line (11-16 FT) off of the Eagles 12 team fouls. BU had caught up with SDC with 4 minutes remaning to tie the game at 28-27, but they failed to build upon their new found lead at that time. Four free throws from Serven and guard Jasmin Thomas put SDC up by 1 going into the half. Biola was 16-29 from the floor with Jessilyn Conicelli leading their way with 14 points (7-10), 11 rebounds and 2 assists. For the Hawks, Brittany Robinson who averages 13.7 points per game, led with 9 points (3-7 FG) in the collective 10-22 showing from the floor.
Refreshed from half, BU recaptured the lead around the 15 minute mark with SDC right on their tail. At 6:23, Eagles contributor Christina Barclay joined one of her teammates with 4 personal fouls. Shortly after that, Serven's fourth three tied the game at 63. The energy that came from Serven's three was quickly snapped by contining connections with Barclay in paint. SDC resorted to three point attempts, but only hit 5-15 in the half. BU would take a 10 point lead (77-67) with a minute remaining, also finishing with a ten point lead, 80-70.
Thomas (5-11 FG, 1-2 3PT, 2-4 FT), Robinson (4-11 FG, 2-7 3PT, 2-2FT) and Melissa Villalobos (4-9FG, 2-7 3PT, 2-2 FT) also finished in double-digits, contributing 36 points. Other team leaders included forward Jermani Daniels with 6 rebounds and Thomas with 4 assists. BU's Conicelli finished with a stunning 22 points (10-15FG), 19 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block.
San Diego Christian travels to Riverside on Tuesday (Feb. 15) against No. 5 California Baptist University. Tip-off at Cal Bap is scheduled for 5:30pm.
