San Diego, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene University (13-11, 9-6 GSAC) pulled out the last second layup to take the win out of the Hawks (7-18, 1-14 GSAC) hands on Tuesday night, 72-71.
The Hawks, who were down the first 19 minutes of the first, capitalized on PLNU turnovers and captured a three point lead before the half on a three from Aaron Felix (15 pt, 5-13 FG, 4-8 3PT). Senior Tyler Mutton lead the Hawks to the 45-44 halftime score with 13 points, going 5-6 from the field and 3-4 from downtown. He would finish with 18 points (7-10 FG, 4-5 3PT).
Great shooting on the court left PLNU 16-25 (64%) from the floor, with 5 three in ten attempts. SDC on the other hand, was 17-30, hitting 8 of 15 threes (53.3%). Loma was 7-10 from the line.
The slipping began when SDC reached an 8 point lead (63-55) with 10:14 on the clock. The Sea Lions gained some footing, retaking the lead with 5:28 to go at 64-63. The final minutes were a scramble to be the last team on top at the buzzer. To the Hawks demise, a layup from PLNU's Marek Klassen erased the one point lead SDC had gained on two free throws from junior Benji Arvizu with 13 seconds to go.
SDC's shooting dropped to 34.8% (8-23), 47.2% overall, hitting 11 three's by games end. Arvizu contributed 12 points (4-6 FG, 4-6 FT) and Calvin Seaberry had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
San Diego Christian hosts Biola University as a part of the 40th year anniversary celebration on February 12 (Sat.) with a game time scheduled for 4:00pm.
