Lakeside, Calif. -- The Hawks snagged their first win on Monday, 9-4, over the La Sierra University Golden Eagles (0-4 AII). LSU remains winless this season and San Diego Christian improves to 1-3 overall.
The first of a two game series started with a walk sandwiched between two hits in the first. The Hawks would bring two of the three runners home on back to back sacrifice flies from Trevor Bloom and Nick Bando. LSU answered in the third on two, two out, deep triples from David Fernandez and Kenneth Curiel to come within one at 3-2. SDC starter Greg Joseph went 2.2 innings giving up 2 runs on 4 hits striking out one.
SDC came back with some insurance runs in the third on Bloom's (1-3, 2 RBI) first triple of the season. He would later score a wild pitch from LSU starting pitcher Aaron Opsvig (5.1 ip, 13 h, 9 r).
A pair of great defensive plays at third from Bloom in top of the fifth stifled the LSU threat keeping the 6-2 score intact until SDC added three in the sixth (9-2). The Golden Eagles tacked on one in the 7th and 8th but SDC still pulled out the win.
Reliever Brandon James (1-0) went four innings giving up 2 hits, a run, walked two, and struck out two in the win.
Senior infielder Mike Bando [pictured above] was 3 for 4 with 2 singles and a double and centerfielder Taylor Maddox rounded out the day going 3 for 3 with 3 singles and 2 runs. Christopher Pascual went 2-3 and Victor Martinez (2-4) posted a double and three RBI's in the win.
The Hawks finished with 15 hits while LSU charted a season high, 8.
La Sierra next hosts SDC on Thursday (Feb. 10) in Riverside for a 2:00pm game.
