Fresno, Calif. -- Senior Jason Starr [pictured left] (10.6 ppg) netted 20 points along with senior Aaron Felix's (12.0 ppg) 18, but still come up short against the 15-8 Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds (8-6 GSAC). The 72-65 final score puts the Hawks at 7-17 overall and 1-13 in the GSAC.
Fresno yieled an early lead to the Hawks (11-9 in the 7th minute of play on a three by Starr, who would hit 6 of 7 by games end. SDC would hold a lead through the half to the 30-27 halftime score. SDC's bench did the work in the first, scoring 23 of their thirty points contributing to the 38.5% (10-26) shooting from the field. SDC was 7-15 from downtown (45.7%) in the first, splitting the work between Tyler Mutton (2), Felix (2) and Starr (3). FPU hit a mere 8 of 23 attempts in the first, but hit 9 of 12 at the line off of SDC's 11 personal fouls.
The second half opened with shakey footing for SDC as Fresno mounted a comeback to take a 52-50 lead with 7:09 to go. From there, SDC hit an occassional free throw or three pointer, but watched FPU's 22 appearances at the line for 18 points help them finish out to the 72-65 win.
FPU shot 48.0% (12-25) in the second to SDC's 11-24 (45.8%) and out rebound SDC 16 to 8. Fresno's free throws (27-34) made the definite difference in an otherwise even game.
Starr (7-8 FG, 6-7 3Pt) added 2 rebounds and 2 steals to his nightly totals. Junior Calvin Seaberry had the team high 6 rebounds and Benji Arvizu topped the Hawks assists with 5 and blocks with 2. FPU's Jordan Wild was 6-8 from the field, 5 of 6 at the line and had 3 steals. He racked up the double-double with 10 rebounds and 18 points.
SDC goes across town to Point Loma Nazarene University on Tuesday (Feb. 8) for their next game. The tip-off is scheduled to take place at 7:30pm following the women's game.
