Escondido, Calif. -- Cal State San Marcos (6-1 AII) continued their winning streak on Saturday in a double-header over the Hawks (0-3, 0-0 GSAC) 5-3 and 8-7.
SDC struck first one a lead off double to left from sophomore Taylor Maddox (1-5, 1 RBI). Maddox advanced to third on a single from Mike Bando, who went 2 for 4 in game one, then came home on a wild pitch from CSUSM starter Matt Kretchmer. Kretchmer lasted through 5.1 innings for the Cougars, held responsible for 2 of the Hawks three runs and 7 of their 9 hits.
Kretchmer made his exit on a 2 run SDC 6th in which senior left fielder Ryan Inverso singled in Brian Charnock for his lone RBI on the game. Things ran relatively smooth through the CSUSM 6th, but their 7th inning rotation tallied three hits off of the Hawks for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. The Cougars would tack on one more in the bottom of the 8th to seal the 5-3 win.
Sophomore starter Brock Heerdt took the loss for SDC going 6.2 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, striking out 6. Senior Dominic Neocoechea was also 2 for 4 for the Hawks and Kevin Silvett, was a solid 3 for 4 for CSUSM.
Game two came down to the final half inning, despite the five run, five hit CSUSM second off of Hawks starter Tyler Sanborn. Sanborn made it out of the inning, but departed from the game giving up 8 hits and five runs, four of them earned. SDC put two on the board in the third, one off of Inverso's RBI double down the right field line and the other off of a single from newcomer Trevor Bloom.
Hawks pitching held the Cougar offense to one hit in the third and fourth, tacking on a run of their own in the fourth. A run a piece in the following innning brought the score to a 6-6 tie going into the 7th. SDC rallied for three runs on three hits, helped out by an error on the Cougars second baseman. It looked as if SDC would pull out their first win of 2011 when disaster struck in the form of a RBI double and single for the CSUSM win.
Senior Luis Perez was handed the loss in the 7th for the Hawks, pitching a total of 1.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out one. Johnny Omahen received the win in the last innning for CSUSM allowing one hit and striking out one.
Inverso finished 4 for 7 with 2 RBIs, followed by Maddox's 3 for 8 and 2 RBIs. Silvett was 5-8 with one double.
CSUSM will come to play the fourth game of the series on March 1 at Stars Field in Lakeside, but the Hawks next game takes place Monday at Stars Field against the La Sierra University Golden Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm.
