Lakeside, Calif. -- San Diego Christian (0-1, 0-0 GSAC) hoped to bring a winning start to the 2011 season on Friday, but Cal State San Marcos (4-1 AII) wrapped up the first of the four game series, 13-4.
It started off promising as junior righty Adair Robles (2-3, made his SDC debut striking out lead off Victor Serna and holding the then two hit Cougars scoreless in the first thanks to an inning ending double play. Senior Gus Hernandez doubled down the left field line to get things going in the second for SDC and Joe Cuttone roped the sixth pitch of his at bat into left to complete Hernandez's work for a 1-0 lead.
An unfortunate turn of events in the top of the third yielded 5 runs on 4 hits to give CSUSM a 5-1 lead. Robles recorded 3 strikeouts in his 3 innings.
Senior Marco Solis took over in the fourth, getting two quick outs, but CSUSM streaked for three consecutive singles and an intentional walk to load the bases. Two walks, a past ball and a double later, CSUSM cleared the bases making it 8-1 before senior Austin Minton closed the wound with an inning ending strikeout.
A two base knock from Hernandez finished clearing the bases in the eighth for three runs (11-4). Two more in the 9th would close out the 13-4 win for San Marcos.
SDC's Hernandez (2-3, 2 RBI) and Cuttone (2-4, 1 RBI) were the Hawks to producers. Robles gave up 6 hits, allowing 5 runs in the loss in the loss for SDC (0-1) and Johnny Holtman went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits facting 27 batters. CSUSM's Kyle Secciani was 3-5 and Austin Coleman and Trent Jemmett were also 2-3, helping out the Cougars finished the game with 15 hits and one error.
San Diego Christian goes to Escondido tomorrow, Saturday (Feb. 5) for a double header match up against the Cougars. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00am at the Cougars new home stadium.
